What is mural or graffiti advertising?

Out of home advertising with graffiti has been proven to engage audiences from the very first moment, as the artist lifts the brush – or spray can – to start their mural. It becomes an effective way of grabbing people’s attention, and an Instagram moment that attracts audiences online as well as in-person.

Graffiti advertising or commercial graffiti refers to out of home advertising campaigns hand-painted on large facades or billboards. This form of mural advertising turns city walls into canvases for contemporary art inspired by or related to a brand’s campaign.

Hiring contemporary street artists to hand-paint a mural that highlights a brand or a company’s message, while people take photos or interact with the mural (see AR murals), combines out of home advertising with an important experiential aspect – one that’s started to receive a lot of attention in recent years.

That the painter is a real urban artist, painting live on the street where passers-by and neighbors can watch the progress step-by-step, is something that out of home advertisers have increasingly focused on. Another aspect that makes hand-painted graffiti murals attractive to conscious advertisers is the fact that no printing is needed, in contrast to traditional printed billboards that use non-eco-friendly materials like non-recyclable vinyl, toxic ink and glue.

Because of the artist’s astonishing skills, there’s a high chance that a spillover effect will happen and the art will make a big splash on social media networks – increasing reach far beyond the offline mural.

In the past decade, renowned brands such as Polo Ralph Lauren, Netflix, Sony, and Adidas have hired top street artists for their out-of-home advertising campaigns, with great hybrid success: online and offline.

What our experts recommend

Don’t paint what could be printed! In our experience, graffiti advertising reaches its full potential when it’s an artist’s interpretation of a campaign’s look & feel in their own style. When people see your graffiti art advertising on a large facade, you want to maximize their amazement at its hand-painted nature.

Our matchmaking service ensures that you’ll work with an artist who fully understands your brand message and visual identity, and who has the sensitivity and skill to fuse it with their own artistic style. In my eyes, this is the best way to authentically and effectively let art transport your campaign message to a large crowd of people. We can help you create a memorable out-of-home experience through creative storytelling, and raise curiosity and excitement from early on in the artistic process. The more heart and soul goes into your ad, the more likely that jaws will drop – which means more visitors at the wall, more photos, more shares, more likes… more reach, more visibility, more impact.

Our clients

We love helping brands and artists create beautiful outcomes together, and seeing both sides walk away with a smile.

Thanks so much for this, and apologies for the slow response, it’s been a very busy week! This is all incredibly helpful. I have a discussion with the client this week, and I’ll be sure to report back as soon as there are developments. Your breakdown is incredibly clear, so I’ve not got any follow-up questions in the meantime.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to queries you may have

What are the advantages of mural advertising?

Mural advertising is handmade, artistic advertising where the creative process itself attracts attention and creates excitement around a brand. People are keener to take and share photographs of mural adverts than they are of printed ads. Mural adverts are also bigger than the usual ad-spaces (except for scaffolding ads), so the client has an advantage in the visually crowded cityscape, where many companies and brands fight for attention.

What are other names for mural advertising?

Mural advertising is also known as facade paintings, graffiti advertising, street art advertising, and hand-painted advertising.

How much does street art mural advertising cost?

The cost of street art mural advertising mainly depends on the location (which city, and whereabouts in the city) and the size of the facade. For a high-traffic area (< 250K visual contacts) and a size of < 100m², the price would start from 50,000 €.

What is the usual duration of a graffiti advertising campaign?

For maximum impact, the ideal duration of a graffiti advertisement is 1 month. Depending on your media plans and wishes, we can also organize a longer period. Shorter periods, or even pop-up ads, are possible too.

How long does it usually take an artist to paint a mural with graffiti advertisement?

It takes an artist anything between 5-10 days. The exact duration depends on the size of the surface and the complexity of the design. It’s always a good idea to build in some buffer time in order to account for bad weather conditions.

How do I find an appropriate wall or environment to place my ad?

Get in touch with us, and we’ll guide you through the process and secure the best location for your campaign.
